The Relevance Of Alcohol Therapy And How Alcohol Dependency And Mental Health Difficulties Regularly Lead To Friendship, Divorce, Marital, And Relationship Problems

Miss Benning was a health instructor at the most underfinanced co-educational high school in the region. Even though she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already achieved a reputation as a teacher with a teaching approach that encouraged and inspired students to learn and to think.

For instance, one Monday afternoon she addressed the students in her class and announced the following: “For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism facts from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a less general and explicit standpoint.”

“Not all of these alcoholism signs will absolutely demonstrate that someone with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the more likely it is that he or she is an alcohol dependent person.”

Miss Benning then told the members in the class that each student would be accountable for examining three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class via a seven minute oral presentation.

The Students are Wound Up About Giving An In-Depth Presentation to Their Fellow Pupils About The Signs of Alcoholism

After learning about the different alcohol dependency signs for quite a few days, the time had finally arrived for the student presentations. It was instantly apparent that her students were excited about the subject matter because the material that they presented was first-rate. To say that Miss Benning was pleasantly surprised with the passion manifested by the students in her classroom regarding this subject matter was an understatement.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Benning passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Benning then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top eight alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After roughly twenty minutes, Miss Benning collected the pieces of paper and informed her pupils that after she examines the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.

There was some real anticipation by the pupils while they were leaving Miss Benning’s classroom. One could swear that her students couldn’t wait for the next day to arrive so that they could find out the results of their in-class research.

The Students Contrast Their Numbers With the Findings From A Council of Chemical Dependency Experts

When the next school day came, Miss Benning handed out a piece of paper that listed the top five alcoholism signs according to the students’ rankings. To the left of these results, she added another column that was labeled “experts’ response.” She then told the pupils in her class that the numbers in the additional column she added signified the answers that were generated by a team of drug and alcohol addiction experts.

Miss Benning asked the pupils in her classroom to look over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within a minute or two, virtually every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the professionals. For example, almost every pupil disagreed with the highest ranked answer given by the specialists, to be precise, “Do you feel exceedingly nauseous when you refrain from drinking?”

The Primary Difference Between Alcohol Dependency and Alcohol Abuse is the Physical Dependency That is Experienced With Alcoholism and Not With Alcohol Abuse

Miss Benning then explained to the students in her classroom why this answer was the most correct sign of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

In effect this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol abruptly quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Miss Benning then informed the students in her classroom that alcohol withdrawal symptoms are responses by the brain and by the body to the deprivation of alcohol to which they had become acclimated. Stated another way, alcohol withdrawal symptoms are messages from the body and from the brain telling an individual who is addicted to alcohol that something is exceedingly wrong and needs to be rectified. These messages consist of several dangerous, painful, and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can possibly lead to someone’s death if the proper therapy is not promptly undertaken.

Miss Benning then discussed the multitude of alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be gone through when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking.

The fact that Miss Benning tried to underline was this: a person who engages in alcohol abuse can experience almost any and every one of the alcohol dependency signs that the students had ranked, but the one sign or symptom that few, if any, individuals who engage in alcohol abuse ever experience is alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

To explain this as precisely as possible, Miss Benning underscored the fact that alcohol abusers, unlike alcohol dependent individuals, are not alcohol dependent and as a consequence, when they quit drinking, they almost never experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

The Students Feel They Have Uncovered A Variance With the Findings From The Group of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Authorities

The pupils also disagreed with the second ranked answer given by the substance abuse specialists, to be precise, “Have you ever had a drink the first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?”

Miss Benning informed the pupils in her classroom that this sign does not inevitably suggest that the problem is alcohol dependency, but that it does stress the need that people who are alcohol dependent have to drink in order to avoid alcohol withdrawals.

To the astonishment of most of the students, Miss Benning stated that according to different scientific studies, only 25% of the alcohol addicted people in the United States ask for alcohol dependency rehabilitation. This amazed most of the pupils because they reasoned that first hand experience of the gruesome statistics and facts associated with alcohol addiction would motivate most of the individuals who are alcohol dependent to ask for alcohol dependency treatment.

Miss Benning then explained that alcohol dependent people not only need alcohol on an everyday basis in order to function but they also need alcohol on a daily basis so they can keep away from possible alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Evidently, the alcohol dependent person’s need to drink on a daily basis is more powerful than logic or facts. Certainly, since the thirst for alcohol is “reality” to the alcohol dependent person, this is a thorny issue that is hard to negate.

The Incidence of Alcohol Dependency and Mental Health Difficulties Regularly Leads to Friendship, Divorce, Relationship, and Marital Problems

Finally, Miss Benning explained to pupils that it is important to realize that alcoholism and different mental health predicaments such as depression are highly interlinked. In addition, the incidence of alcohol addiction and mental health problems commonly result in friendship, marital, relationship, and divorce problems.

The Pupils are Enthused to Learn About Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms in Today’s Society

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Benning knew that she had stimulated and motivated her pupils to stop and think about an important health and social problem that exists in our culture.

How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DWI conviction? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they require? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many individuals lose their lives each year from a condition that is one hundred percent preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many people’s lives are cut short due to irresponsible and destructive drinking? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related violence or crime each and every year?

Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in an Excessive and Irresponsible Manner?

So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the devastating and destructive nature of careless drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an excessive and abusive manner.

Stated more forcefully, with the host of relationship issues, legal proceedings, health dilemmas, financial problems, and employment difficulties that are correlated with chronic alcohol abuse and alcoholism, why would any individual with good problem solving skills want to drink in an irresponsible and abusive manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are examined more closely, abusive and careless drinking makes even less sense and becomes more illogical.

Wouldn’t you think that chronic alcohol abusers would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they manifest? In a similar way doesn’t it seem reasonable to think that many more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the person in the household who is an alcohol abuser or an alcoholic? Not only this but wouldn’t you think that people who drink irresponsibly would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by reading about various alcohol related statistics?

After reviewing the alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency research, the point is so significant that it needs to be said again: With all of the damaging and unhealthy outcomes that are directly or indirectly linked to repetitive and continuous alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, why would any individual want to engage in excessive and unhealthy drinking?

What Can be Done About the Widespread Nature of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction in the U.S.?

So what can be done about the pervasive nature of alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse in the U.S.?

Our students need more relevant and more meaningful preventative and educational approaches and methods so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.
With a similar line of thought, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of an alcohol or drug abuse ”high” or “buzz”.
People who are alcohol dependent or alcohol abusers need to look look at themselves honestly and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol rehab they need.
Society needs to get the message to more individuals about the damaging and unhealthy outcomes of careless and abusive drinking.

There’s Room For Hope if Those Who Engage in Repeated and Continuous Drinking Can Become Motivated to Get the Alcohol Rehab They Need

There’s room for hope and optimism if individuals can start drinking in moderation and those who engage in careless and hazardous drinkingcan become encouraged to get the alcohol rehabilitation they require. Indeed, why put your loved ones through pain, turmoil, and suffering because of your excessive and abusive drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even stopping drinking if you can’t control your drinking behavior? From a different perspective, why not improve upon your dating and marital relationships that are the effects of alcohol rehab?

I work with numerous young guys who work in construction who manifest heavy and hazardous drinking. After working real hard all day, it seems to make a lot of sense to go to the local tavern to have a few brews with one’s drinking buddies. Frequently, however, it seems that the well-intentioned drink or two becomes a situation in which a lot of shots and beers are consumed, much money is spent, and several hours are spent at the local tavern instead of spending time with their wife or girlfriend, family, or with their friends.

Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Can Result in Relationship, Marital, and Friendship Difficulties

Is it actually all that astounding in these circumstances that more than a few my hard working buddies suffer from alcohol related financial difficulties in spite of the fact that they make a good wage? How complicated can it be for these hard working guys to grasp the fact that excessive drinking regularly results in commitment, relationship, friendship, communication, and marital problems? Why are these alcoholism and alcohol abuse signs so hard for my hard working buddies to see?

Careless and Excessive Drinking Can Result in DUIs, Work Problems, Numerous Health Problems, and Different Mental Health Issues Like Depression

Should it actually be surprising to anyone that these construction workers could receive a DUI almost any day or night of the week? Is anyone sincerity dazed when these hard working men start to show up tardy for work because of their heavy and irresponsible drinking?

Does it honestly shock anyone to know that these hard working guys eventually complain about alcohol-related health problems such as hangovers, alcohol poisoning, a loss of energy, and sleep disturbances? Is it actually amazing that many of these hard working guys are starting to experience various mental health problems such as depression? Why can’t these construction workers “see” these alcohol abuse effects?

In a way, my hard working friends have gotten into a dysfunctional circumstance that is resulting in a life of alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse. My wish is that these hard working guys will finally understand that excessive drinking is not healthy and that they need to talk to their physician or somebody at the local alcohol treatment clinic about their problem drinking.

Regarding the drinking behavior displayed by these hard working men, the point to highlight is that honesty is necessary. Indeed, these construction workers, similar to others who involve themselves irresponsible and hazardous drinking, need to look at their actions and make an honest evaluation of what heavy and hazardous drinking is doing to their relationships, to their mental health, to their finances, to their health, and to their jobs. In short, these hard working guys need to understand the alcohol side effects of their irresponsible and heavy drinking.

There’s Room For Optimism If Those Who Engage in Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Can Become Persuaded to Get the Alcohol Rehab and Alcohol Detox They Need

My hard working friends need to get motivated and inspired about wanting to make a favorable change in their lives. Stated differently, these hard working men need to get motivated to go to their family physician or to the local alcohol counseling center and find out whether or not they are basically abusing alcohol or if they are alcohol dependent. Based on the information that is unveiled, these hard working guys then need to get the alcohol detox treatment and the alcohol rehabilitation they need.

The fortunate news is that there are is an almost countless number of drug and alcohol treatment clinics, hospitals, rehab programs, rehabilitation facilities, and treatment centers where these construction workers can get first-class rehabilitation for their hazardous and excessive drinking. And with a little effort, it’s even possible to find rehab programs, treatment centers, drug and alcohol treatment clinics, rehabilitation facilities, and hospitals that are fairly inexpensive.

Professional Alcohol Abuse or Alcohol Dependency Help Can Begin With a Short and to the Point Phone Call

There were obviously times in the past when quality help for alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency was more expensive and far less available that it is now.
